A Rebuttal to Christopher Hillar and Friedrich Sommer’s Comment on Distilling Laws from Data

چکیده

Hillar and Sommer recently published a comment [3] on the validity of the fitness criterion used to search for free-form natural laws in experimental data [1]. The comment presents experimental and theoretical arguments that the particular fitness criterion evaluates to zero and assert that the algorithm described in the paper cannot accomplish the stated goals. They further propose an alternative metric which they claim to be better suited.

Comment on the Article “distilling Free-form Natural Laws from Experimental Data”

A paper by Schmidt and Lipson [3, 4] introduced the idea that “free-form natural laws” can be learned from experimental measurements in a physical system using symbolic regression algorithms. The most important component of that work is a fitness function involving the pair-wise derivatives of time-series measurements of system state-space data, which is purported to contain no assumptions abou...

“Big” Food, Tobacco, and Alcohol: Reducing Industry Influence on Noncommunicable Disease Prevention Laws and Policies; Comment on “Addressing NCDs: Challenges From Industry Market Promotion and Interferences”

The food, tobacco and alcohol industries have penetrated markets in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a significant impact on these countries’ burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Tangcharoensathien and colleagues describe the aggressive marketing of unhealthy food, alcohol and tobacco in LMICs, as well as key tactics used by these industries to resis...

Corrigendum to "Finiteness theorems and algorithms for permutation invariant chains of Laurent lattice ideals" [J. Symb. Comput. 50(March 2013) 314-334]

We correct errors in the proof of Hillar and del Campo (2013, Theorem 19) and in the description of Hillar and del Campo (2013, Table 1). We also fix some typos and notational issues. We thank Thomas Kahle for pointing out the mistake in the table and Robert Krone for finding the gap in our original proof. We begin with a comment to avoid confusion in the proof of Hillar and del Campo (2013, Pr...

Deciphering subsampled data: adaptive compressive sampling as a principle of brain communication

A new algorithm is proposed for a) unsupervised learning of sparse representations from subsampled measurements and b) estimating the parameters required for linearly reconstructing signals from the sparse codes. We verify that the new algorithm performs efficient data compression on par with the recent method of compressive sampling. Further, we demonstrate that the algorithm performs robustly...

An Untapped Resource: Patient and Public Involvement in Implementation; Comment on “Knowledge Mobilization in Healthcare Organizations: A View From the Resource-Based View of the Firm”

This commentary considers the potential role of patient and public involvement in implementation. Developing an analytical thread from the resource-based view of the Firm, we argue that this involvement may create unique resources that have the capacity to enhance the impact of implementation activity for healthcare organisations.
